Nithdale Romneys changes to lambing on hill country unshepherded

Although we have lambed our commercial ewes on the hill unshepherded for a number of years, until 2011 we lambed our stud ewes in the paddocks so as to tag lambs. From 2012 we made the decision to lamb them on the hill unshepherded also.

We can do this using DNA technology available through Zoetis Genetics. By tissue sampling our sires and ewes we are able to determine the parentage of the lambs through their own DNA.

This reflects more what many of our clients are doing now. Due to the terrain of their farms they don’t shepherd their sheep. This goes along with our philosophy to breed a low input, low cost sheep that still performs.
